Transcending = Much more than relaxation
Transcending has a far more profound effect than just relaxation. Other meditation techniques use focus, control and concentration or contemplation which require effort to prevent your mind wandering off. Effort is opposed to relaxation and keeps the mind active trying to make something happen or keep the process going. Effort is opposed to the mind settling down and cannot result in transcending or the deep rest needed to dissolve stress. Today, through modern science, by measuring what happens in the body and particularly the brain during the practice of Transcendental Meditation we easily see how unique TM is– it produces
A profound state of rest: much deeper than ordinary relaxation, even deeper than sleep.
Inner peace and happiness: decrease of stress hormones/increase of happiness hormones.
Rejuvenation: reversal of ageing, improvements in performance, memory and all aspects of health, increased grey matter in the brain, etc
Transcending = Rest 2 x Deeper than Sleep
When your mind transcends the finest impulse of thought, it comes to a state of complete inner silence. This happens in a completely natural and effortless way in TM. You can’t make the mind silent by trying, nor do we have to. With the right technique, the mind will go there by itself. When the mind transcends, the body spontaneously comes into a very deep state of relaxation as well, far deeper than the rest gained during deep sleep.
This level of rest during meditation can be objectively measured by monitoring oxygen consumption. This graph, from a Harvard Medical School research study, shows that, during TM, the body comes into a state of rest that is twice as deep as even the deepest rest during sleep. More than 30 studies around the world have confirmed this unique rest during TM practice.
Deep rest activates your bodies inner healing power. Your body has a completely natural way to remove the tensions that it accumulates. This happens naturally during sleep but the rest during sleep doesn’t always go deep enough to remove more deeply-rooted, traumatic stresses. Transcending gives a level of rest that can help dissolve those deeper rooted stresses that are the seeds of disease, ageing and mental worry.
Transcendental Meditation can be useful in resolving a wide range of stress-related issues such as migraine, ulcers, high blood pressure, angina, asthma, anxiety, over eating, insomnia, and excessive use of alcohol. cigarettes, and non-prescribed drugs.
